✨Strategic Goals

In 2022, I wrote a strategic goals document for the Wikipedia team because I wasn't sure what library administration wanted from us. Did they want us to create new pages? Improve popular pages? Use library sources? I wrote these "strategic goals" to answer those questions, in absence of more specific guidance.

Leverage our unique resources

• Upload images and other digital sources and make them discoverable

  • Finding places to use images on Wikipedia articles

• “Information broadcasting/bridging”

  • Cite OA/free digital sources that are unique to our institution

    • BYU Studies, scholarsarchive

    • Archive.org books from digitization

    • Popular manuscript collections as identified by special collections reference staff

• “Information liberation” (experimental)

  • Using our rarest stacks books as sources

  • Only upkeep for findingaid links (i.e., no more projects to just add external links and no other material).

Attend to special interests

• Mormon arts/literature

  • Overview pages

  • New pages or page improvements for notable artists/writers

• General interest Mormon history pages

  • Example: Death in 19th-century Mormonism (a student page)

• Wikipedia gaps

  • New pages for women, PoC, and some men from Mormon history

  • Consult with curators and subject librarians for ideas

• (Only) dead faculty members

  • Biographies of living people (BLP) for faculty members have caused some issues in the past.

Research and Development

• Try experiments with emerging technology

  • Wikidata and structured data on Commons

• Attend Wikimedian-in-Residence Exchange Network (WREN) meetings

• Read articles and case studies relevant to our work; present at relevant conferences

• Update student training documentation

Metrics and Assessment

• Copyedit student work

• Send out semesterly newsletter

• Track referral data annually (to see how many links from Wikipedia go to library pages)

• Track page and image views annually
